Under Firing & Over Firing

Be sure your kiln is operating properly by periodically placing test cones throughout.

  • Do not unload your kiln while it is still very hot. The cooler room temperature may cause crazing or crack the ware.

  • For more on Firing Information go to www.ortonceramic.com To view their helpful Reference Library click the following on their website: Firing Products/Products for Ceramic Arts/Pyrometric Cones/Reference Library.

Under Firing & Over Firing Problems & Solutions

1. Colors look dull and/or are powdery. 2. Pink shades are orange or brown. 3. Halo from overcoat is still visible.

All these problems may be easily corrected by re-firing to the correct temperature.

1. Colors look faded. 2. Red shades appear grey or white. 3. Decal sank into glaze leaving an outline.

Unfortunately these overfiring problems cannot be corrected.
